BBC Spotlight on Olympic Vet

Hallmarq's Equine MRI featured in a short film about Edd Knowles, vet at the Olympic equestrian centre

Olympic fever has gripped the country, and the spotlight is on our sportsmen and women aiming for gold. However, behind the scenes are a huge support team of all manner of specialists to keep the athletes in tip top condition. The horses are no exception, and are under 24 hour vet surveillance to make sure they are fit and well. One of these vets is Edd Knowles, MA VetMB MRCVS.

As part of the Olympic coverage, the BBC yesterday showed a short feature about Edd, showing him at work at Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic in Kent. Also featured in the clip was Hallmarq's own Standing Equine MRI, which was shown as Edd oversaw the scanning of a horse's hoof. Bell Equine has a long association with Hallmarq, having been the first ever practice to have a Hallmarq scanner installed in 2002.

Many of the Olympic horses have been through a Hallmarq MRI at some point, and Hallmarq is proud to support them all in their quest for Gold.

Bell Equine Hosts Regional BEVA Meeting

Hallmarq supports CPD evening for equine vets in the South East

Hallmarq’s very first site, Bell Equine in Kent, yesterday hosted a CPD meeting for BEVA members of the South East region. Attendees enjoyed several talks on some of the topics facing equine veterinarians today.

Professor Josh Slater of the RVC dramatically illustrated the increasing threat of exotic diseases due to climate change and bird movements. There was discussion as to how to recognise diseases such as West Nile Virus since their clinical signs are so similar to many far more common problems.

Andrew Harrison of Three Counties Equine Hospital updated the audience on the latest directions in equine insurance. One in four insured owners make a claim each year and with the average claim being £1250 and the common maximum fee limit being unchanged for over 20 years, the insurance industry is struggling to meet the expectations of both vets (for sufficient cover) and owners (for affordable premiums). It is a fact that 80% of fees paid by insurance companies going towards diagnosis. Complex insurance terms and conditions, poorly understood by clients, make general assumptions risky and there was a good deal of discussion from the audience around Harrison's selected "frequently asked questions".

Susie Blackburn, Merial's local equine specialist, rounded off the first part of the evening with an outline of the company's influenza, ulcer and worming products, before breaking for a tasty mixed buffet.

Dr Elizabeth Barr from Bell Equine, in change of schedule order, continued the evening by discussing the diagnosis and treatment of the "swollen hock" in its various manifestations.

This year's event from 10th-12th of January was no exception.

Alongside presentations by Hallmarq staff, the 61 delegates were treated to talks on the latest topics in Equine MRI research by some of the leading veterinarians in the field.

In between talks there was even some time for a spot of skiing. However, only the very determined chose to brave the blizzards! Others took a cable car to the Aguille du Midi and enjoyed the view over the Vallée Blanche.
